Ya’ll know that I will almost always choose a liquid lipstick over a traditional cream stick, simply for the wearability, ease of use, longevity and fade resistance. For the longest time, my liquid lipstick collection consisted of 95% prestige brands because I could not find an affordable liquid lipstick that lived up to my expectations.
Well, the drugstore has seriously stepped it up over the last few months and now my collection is filled with amazing affordable brands and surprisingly good formulas. The product that I own the most of and that gets the most wear are, without a doubt, the Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipsticks.
The Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipsticks ($11.99 CAD) are the best of the best when it comes to affordable liquid lips. Every aspect, from the shade range and the formula to the applicator and the packaging were so carefully thought out and planned to perfection.
The Matte Ink Lipsticks come in a range of 10 original shades that cover the complete spectrum of possibilities but now there are 10 new shades being added to the collection. They are being touted as the UnNudes Collection – a new kind of nude, a range of unexpected, unconventional neutrals and neutral toned bolds.
The UnNudes are Poet (a baby pink nude), Driver (a creamy beige nude), Philosopher (a light lavender nude), Visionary (a lavender grey nude), Huntress (a deep grey nude), Protector (a deep brown nude), Fighter (a burnt orange nude), Ruler (a deep red nude), Amazonian (a burnt sienna nude) and Seductress ( a mauve nude)
I have been particularly obsessed with Fighter, Amazonian, and Driver but all of them are stunning.
The formula is the reason that these lipsticks are truly so one of a kind. They have a thin, liquidy texture that contains concentrated ink pigments to deliver a completely opaque, intensely pigmented finish in one swipe. They are insanely saturated with a bold, vibrant impactful colour in one application.
This intense opacity is part of what makes them work so well as you only need to apply tiny amount to get the effect you want without extra product building up on the lips. It also means no cracking or flaking as you would typically get with thicker clay based products.
The ultra-thin, ultra-lightweight formula glides onto the lips and sinks in, leaving a weightless layer of colour. When you apply the lipstick with the unique arrowhead doe foot applicator, it will deposit the perfect amount of product in one smooth stroke with no patchiness, skipping or sticking.
Right after application is when the magic starts to work, unlike traditional matte lipsticks, the Matte Ink lipsticks remain slightly tacky from the higher amount of moisture in the formula. This makes for a much more comfortable wear.
I let the lipstick dry for 20 seconds without touching my lips together and it will set down leaving a smooth, velvety matte finish that never reaches that dry, cakey place we all hate. Once the lipstick is fully set, it will still feel slightly tacky but it will not budge, transfer, fade or migrate. It becomes locked and loaded for all day wear (i’m talking 12 straight hours) that can only be removed with a specific oil based remover.
Along with the formula, the applicator is incredibly unique and is a big piece of why I love these lipsticks.
The doe foot applicator has a unique tapered arrowhead shape that is covered with custom flocking to help give a precise, even application. This shape makes applying the thin formula SO EASY, as you are able to line the lips and fill them in without a lip liner or expert skills. It hugs and follows the lines of your lips for a ridiculously easy, one coat wonder.
Have you tried the Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipsticks? If so, what shade is your favourite?
