Tis’ the season for new releases and there are a million and one things on my radar. I’m slowly but surely working my way through the products that have come across my desk and today I wanted to share a peek at the newest permanent releases from one of my favourite brands – NARS Cosmetics.
NARS is one of the most iconic makeup brands out there, known for their rule-breaking, high-style, forward thinking products that challenge the norm and celebrate individuality. They are all about creating products for every attitude and every lifestyle so no matter who you are or what you do they will have a range of products that are perfect for you.
New For Base
Their latest release is perfection for the girl on-the-go, the girl who hustles all day long and needs to look put together and naturally flawless without too much fuss. The new NARS Velvet Matte Foundation Stick ($55 CAD/$45 USD) is a new foray for the brand who is so well known for their stunning foundations that come in liquid form (Sheer Glow, All Day Luminous etc). Now you can take the beautiful, skin like yet perfected magic that is NARS foundations wherever you go with this new double ended stick format.
The new Velvet Matte Foundation Stick is a lovely cream foundation that instantly smooths over skin, covering most imperfections, redness, and discolouration with it’s low-medium yet buildable coverage. It blends beautifully into the skin and layers easily for a lightweight skin-like finish. It is perfect for the girl who likes a more natural look or for those easy makeup days when all you need is a little bit of coverage.
It is described as having a “soft matte” finish that mattifies skin and it is indeed “soft” with more of a velvety satin finish that lets your natural glow show through. Although it is not an overly dry matte, I found this foundation to be best for combination or thoroughly hydrated skin that doesn’t have dry patches or excessive texture because it will accentuate that. It can be combined with a fuller coverage concealer and a setting powder to amp up the coverage and tame any issues but keep in mind that this foundation is not designed to deliver an intense flawless face so let your skin do the talking!
Application & Shade Range
Foundation sticks (and all other stick products in general) are one of my favourite forms of makeup. I love how quick and easy it is to swipe on and blend out and NARS have really nailed that aspect. The double ended stick has 0.31 oz of product on one end and a removable Touch-up Blender on the other. I love this packaging for those rushed mornings or days when I need to reapply because you can snap the blender into place and buff the product into the exact place you want it. On a regular basis, I use a beauty sponge to apply the foundation but I think the blender is a great idea for when I need to throw it in my purse and head out the door.
The Velvet Matte Foundation Stick* currently comes in 20 shades, all of which match up with their other foundations. So if you are Siberia in Sheer Glow you will also be Siberia in the Velvet Matte – how awesome is that?
Overall, the shade range is great but could use some expansion. They have a pretty big collection of light-medium toned shades with both warm and cool undertones but they are lacking shades for very fair skin with a cool or neutral undertone as well as for deeper skin.
I was sent the shades Fiji Light 5 (light with yellow undertones), Mont Blanc Light 2 (light with pink undertones), and Tahoe Med/Dark 2 (medium/dark with caramel undertones). I absolutely love the undertone of Mont Blanc but it’s actually a shade or two darker than my true skin tone. The lightest shade Siberia might have worked but it is too yellow for my neutral complexion. I am able to make Mont Blanc work with some blending and some bronzer and I really don’t mind with such a pretty finish.
New For Lips
Another new release from NARS is probably one of the most exciting releases this year, my all time favourite lipstick formula has expanded to include 6 NEW SHADES! I originally reviewed the Audacious Lipsticks ($40 CAD)* 2 years ago (read it here) and I instantly fell in love with the shades Anna (a smokey rose) and Barbara (a tan rose).
Now they have released 6 new STUNNING shades of these weightless, ultra rich, super-pigmented, luxurious lipsticks. The shades are Vibeke (a beige nude), Linda (a caramel), Aya (a chocolate brown), Dayne (a lavender grey), Kirat (a deep bright purple) and Louise (a deep crimson).

New For Eyes
Last but definitely not least, the Audacious Mascara ($34 CAD)* has been given a facelift with 3 new fall appropriate shades (a purple, a navy and a red brown) It is described as “a buildable, all-in-one mascara with an exclusive, lash-catching brush that separates, lengthens, and amplifies” and it gave me long, fanned out lashes with a warm, smokey brown tone that had me feeling all sorts of festive.
NARS is on top of the world with all of these new fall releases and just wait until you see their holiday collection! I have been loving the Velvet Matte Foundation Stick for no-makeup, makeup days and the darker shade has been great for cream bronzing. I am absolutely obsessed with the new shades of the Audacious Lipsticks and I have loved adding the Audacious Mascara to my lower lashes!
