We’ve all found ourselves in the middle of a makeup meltdown once or twice. Whether our foundation is slipping and sliding in the hot sun, our eyeliner is smudged beyond repair or we went a little too heavy on the powder, makeup meltdowns are inevitable when we don’t take every step possible to keep our makeup locked into place.
My number 1 secret weapon for preventing those makeup emergencies is a good makeup setting spray and frankly, I never do my makeup without one!
What Is A Setting Spray?
Makeup Setting Sprays come in a variety of formulas and finishes but essentially they are a liquid mist meant to set and refresh makeup, keeping it in place through all conditions including excessive heat, wind, water, activity and wear.
A good setting spray will keep your makeup from smudging, transferring, settling into fine lines, creasing, melting, moving or breaking up. They can be used with both liquid and powder products to keep colours vibrant, soften harsh lines, blend products and help powders melt into the skin. They can be sprayed directly onto the skin or tapped into place to target certain areas using a sponge.
Setting sprays are not only used to set makeup in place but to refresh and revive makeup throughout the day (travel size bottles are great for your handbag!) and some even contain skincare benefits.
My Must Have Mists
1. The Everyday Mist –
Skindinavia Makeup Finishing Spray ($29-$39 USD)
The very first ever setting spray and one of my old school favourites. I fully reviewed both the Setting Spray and Primer Spray (which you can read here) in the past and it remains a staple in my collection. The secret weapon of many makeup artists, this lightweight breathable mist locks your makeup into place for 16 hours and you are left with basically bulletproof makeup.
2. The Hydrating Spray –
Urban Decay Chill Cooling & Hydrating Makeup Setting Spray ($38 CAD)
Urban Decay is known for their range of setting sprays but Chill is my particular favourite for its moisture resistant properties and hydrating skin benefits. This micro-fine mist has the perfect even spray and features an exclusive Temperature Control Technology that chills the surface of your makeup to keep it looking fresh for up to 12 hours. This technology makes it the perfect pick for dry or combination skin while Urban Decay’s All Nighter or De-Slick Spray is best for oily skin.
3. The Cult Classic –
Mac Cosmetics Prep & Prime Fix+ ($27 CAD)
Probably the most well-known makeup setting mist used by plenty of artists, Fix+ is a lightweight water based mist that gently soothes and refreshes skin while finishing and setting makeup. It is designed to prepare skin for the application of makeup as well as keep it fresh all day long and is packed with vitamins and minerals. It is also infused with green tea, chamomile and cucumber to soothe and refresh. It is an artist’s best friend as it includes glycerin to help products stick to skin and to bring out the metallic pigments in shadows.
4. The Glow Getter –
Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist ($58 CAD)
Unlike any other setting spray, the Tatcha Dewy Skin Mist is a fine mist moisturizer for dewy, glowing, luminous skin. It offers a boost of soothing hydration, formulated with 20% botanical oils and humectants that moisturize deep down without clogging pores. This spray is also infused with an anti-aging complex that erases signs of dryness, dull skin, and wrinkles. This stuff will not only help your skin flourish but it will give you a gorgeous glow and radiant finish.
5. The Good Skin Spray –
Bliss Triple Oxygen Radiance Restoring Mist ($47 CAD)
This multi-benefit facial mist is not only a great final step in the makeup process but it is also an incredible skin care product (I love to use it as my morning toner). It features Vitamin C for rich radiance and CPR Technology that helps skin with hydration, toning, and oxygen absorption. It also helps to protect skin against environmental aggressors for a glowing, youthful looking complexion. It also features a really great citrus scent!
