The NYX Nation | NYX Slim Lip Pencils & MAC Dupes

Hey Beauties!

Welcome to the second part of my NYX Nation Series! Last week we looked at NYX’s best concealers (if you didn’t see it, click here!) and this week we are talking about one of my absolute holy grail NYX products – the Slim Lip Pencil!

Lip liners are an absolute essential in my day to day makeup routine. I don’t feel quite right without a liner underneath whatever lipstick I choose for that day or even by itself all over my lips. Since I am such a lip liner addict I have collected a ridiculous amount with a bunch of different types and brands but the NYX Slim Lip Pencils are by far my favourite!

The Details

The NYX Slim Lip Pencils come in an incredible 60 shades that range from the palest nudes to browns, mauves, reds, oranges, pinks and even black. They have the most extensive shade range I have ever seen from any brand including MAC. They have the classic everyday shades that everyone needs and then they have unique shades that you won’t find anywhere else.

The Slim Lip Pencils are traditional wooden pencils that need to be sharpened. Each pencil is coated in black with a matching cap and the colour of the pencil on the very end to make it easy to identify. The colour coded ends are a huge benefit when you have a big collection of lip liners, they make it so easy to find the colour you want without having to dig through every single one.

The Shades

I currently own 6 of the NYX Slim Lip Pencils but to be honest I have a list of about 30 shades I want to add to my collection once I can track them down. With that said, the shades I do own are more on the neutral side of things. I have plenty of nudes, browns and mauves but I really do want to try out some of the more adventurous shades. I currently own Nutmeg, Nude Truffle, Nude Beige, Mauve, Ever and Natural.

The Formula

As you can see in the swatches (which are one swipe down and one up), every pencil is incredibly pigmented. They have amazing colour payoff and you don’t have to work for that payoff. Most wooden lip liners are very dry and the colour doesn’t transfer to the skin easily so you have to go over each spot multiples times to see any sort of colour but that is obviously not the case with these.

In addition to being super pigmented, the NYX Slim Lip Pencils are wonderfully creamy. As most wooden lip liners are so dry, they tend to drag and skip on the lips leaving a chalky finish and irritated lips. These liners are the opposite! They are so creamy and smooth that they glide on without any tugging or skipping. They are a pleasure to apply because it takes only seconds to outline your lips and fill them in. They are also a pleasure to wear because they don’t dry out your lips or cause any sort of chalky feeling.

Their formula is just creamy enough to feel good going on but dry enough that they really adhere themselves to your lips and last all day. On their own they will last a good 6 hours before you need to reapply but underneath a lipstick that will last 8-10 hours and they help your lipstick last longer too!

MAC Dupes

NYX has such an amazing array of shades that it is inevitable for them to have some dupes for more expensive pencils like the ones from MAC. The NYX formula is so good that I actually prefer it to my MAC pencils but MAC is known for their shades so I wanted to find a NYX alternative. I did a little bit of research and found a good list of dupes to share with you.

NYX Toast = MAC Cork

NYX Espresso = MAC Chestnut

NYX 1000 Years = MAC Stone

NYX Ever = MAC Chicory

NYX Mauve = MAC Whirl

NYX Peekaboo Neutral = MAC Dervish

NYX Bloom = MAC Magenta

NYX Deep Purple = MAC Currant

NYX Coffee = MAC Spice

NYX Natural = MAC Boldly Bare

NYX Nude Beige = MAC Stripdown

Final Thoughts

The NYX Slim Lip Pencils are such a fantastic product, they have an amazing formula that packs on the pigment but also feels really good on. They are a great option for lip liner addicts or people who aren’t quite sure about lip liners because of their traditionally tough texture. I love that they come in so many gorgeous shades and I really hope I can add some more to my collection soon!

The NYX Slim Lip Pencils retail for $3.50 USD and are available at Rexall, Jean Coutu, London Drugs and online at BeautyJoint & FTB Beauty. NYX will also be opening two stores in Toronto this month so stay tuned for details on that!
