There is no doubt that 2014 was an amazing year for the world of beauty with so many new releases and reformulations in both the drugstore and luxury markets. I can’t even begin to count all of the new products I have hunted down over the year and there is absolutely no way I choose favourites with so many options. So instead of listing every product I fell in love with in 2014, I gave myself the challenge of choosing 14 products that I used the most throughout the year. As much as I love to see what everyones favourite products were I think it’s a bit more interesting to see what products we actually used on a daily or somewhat daily basis.
Starting with base products I have been completely loyal to one foundation for almost the entire year and that is the L’oreal True Match Super Blendable Foundation. I have become so dedicated to this foundation because it is simply the best I have found at the drugstore. It has buildable medium coverage with a beautiful skin like finish that has just enough of a glow and the shade match is the closest I have been able to find. It lasts all day on my dry skin without separating or clinging to dry patches. I have really enjoyed pairing the True Match foundation with a radiant primer to give my skin that extra glow and I have fallen in love with both the L’oreal Magic Lumi Light Infusing Primer and the Laura Mercier Radiance Foundation Primer. Both have a light texture that glides on while perfecting the look of pores and giving a “lit from within” glow. To finish off my base I have been rather religious about highlighting my under eyes and my favourite product to do just that is the NYX HD Photogenic Concealer Wand. The NYX concealer comes in an array of shades including one that is fair enough to work as a highlighting concealer on my pale skin. It is also a lovely texture and it blends beautifully with my favourite discovery of the year – the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. The idea of using a sponge to apply my makeup never really appealed to me but once I decided to try it I knew I would never look back. The RT sponge gives you the ability to blend your foundation into your skin with such precision that are left with a life like natural skin finish.
Moving on to the next step in my makeup application – the blush. Blush is without a doubt one of my favourite things in the beauty world and I have quite the collection but there are two that I have used over and over again. The first is Benefit Cosmetics’ Rockateur Boxed Blush, a stunning rose gold powder with a bit of shimmer that gives the perfect glowy flush to the cheeks. I have used Rockateur almost every single day for the last year because it is the perfect neutral blush with a bit of something special that works with any look. Along the same lines of the more neutral blush is my second favourite – the Hourglass Cosmetics Ambient Lighting Blush in Mood Exposure that is housed in the Ambient Lighting Blush Palette. Mood Exposure is a mauve mixed with a champagne highlight that reflects beautifully on the cheeks. The Ambient Lighting Blushes are an amazing formulation because they have the Ambient Lighting Powders running through them, they give the perfect mix of colour and glow and they blend seamlessly.
Next up is lipstick – my other complete obsession when it comes to makeup. I have a terrible need to own every single lipstick possible but there are three that I have used repeatedly over the last year. The Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in the shade Primrose was my go to lipstick for all of Spring and Summer, it is a lovely pinky nude with a hint of lilac that just brightens up my complexion perfectly. The other two lipsticks that I have loved are both part of the Kylie Jenner lip trend with more of a mauvey brown base – the Rimmel London Lasting Finish by Kate Moss Lipstick in shade 14 and the NARS Audacious Lipstick in Anna. Both lipsticks have great formulations, the Rimmel being more on the matte end of the spectrum and thus being a bit drying. The NARS is absolute perfection in a lipstick, it is a beautiful satin finish that applies smoothly and has incredible pigmentation.
The last section is eyes but it is also the biggest. I have really grown in my ability to experiment and create new looks with eyeshadow over the last year. My confidence has skyrocketed and along with it has my love for eyeshadow palettes but nothing has been quite as exciting as the Lorac Pro Palette. I’ve only had this in my life for a few months but I have not used anything else, it has 16 stunning shades that cover every single colour you could possibly want in both matte and shimmer formulas. The shadows themselves are gorgeous and so finely milled that blending is a breeze. In my opinion, no eyeshadow look is complete without big bold glamorous lashes and one of my most used this year was the Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real Mascara! This mascara is a fan favourite and for good reason, it creates a false lash effect with no effort and the drama it gives help to bring out the bright colour of my eyes. They’re Real is an absolute staple in my collection and I try to have a tube on hand at all times. Something else that I need to have on hand at all times is an eyebrow pencil. 2014 was the year of eyebrows in my life, I have become completed addicted to filling in my eyebrows and my favourite pencil is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Caramel. I really love this pencil for two reasons, first the nib itself is so tiny that I can draw a perfect outline and mimic the look of real hairs. Second the shade, it is so difficult to find a shade that matches my red hair and Caramel is the perfect mix of ashy brown and red that looks so incredibly natural.
My very last favourite product of 2014 is something that I just recently discovered but I cannot live without – the Almay Oil Free Makeup Eraser Sticks. These babies have completely changed the way I do my makeup because lets be honest, I am not perfect and smudges of shadow or liner are pretty much expected but now I don’t have to ruin my entire look trying to get rid of that tiny mistake. These q-tips are filled with makeup remover that makes it so simple to target a specific mistake and remove it quickly and easily.
Those are my top 14 products of 2014 and I think I did a pretty good job of narrowing down my choices. I highly recommend every single one of these products so if you haven’t tried them I hope you do soon! What were your favourite products this past year?
