For any fashion lover, the Met Gala is one of the most exciting nights of the year. Forget the Oscars, this is when the real fashionistas come out to play. After last years foray into the World of Punk, the Gala returned to its roots with an evening inspired by forties glamour. The Met Gala is held annually to mark the beginning of a exhibition, this years being a dedication to America’s First Couturier Charles James, who is known for glamorous draping, structured shapes and ballgown silhouettes.
Plenty of stars decided to pay homage to Mr James in romantic, vintage inspired gowns, and to be quite honest they were my favourite of the bunch. Others were looking for something with a little more edge and brought out the crop tops, vibrant colours and fun patterns.
My top pick of the night is Dree Hemingway in Proenza Schouler, with her classic forties silhouette accented by a modern plunging neckline and stunning vintage inspired hair and makeup. She looks flawless.
The eight dresses above were completely on point with the theme of the evening and they managed to bring old school glamour to a new place by combining it with modern colours and patterns. Completely besides the point, how amazing is Emma Stone’s Frozen braid?
(Allison Williams in Oscar de la Renta, Karolina Kurkova in Marchesa, Arizona Muse in Ralph & Russo, Dakota Johnson in Jason Wu, Emma Stone in custom Thakoon, Emmy Rossum in Carolina Herrera, Reese Witherspoon in Stella McCartney and Hayden Panettiere in Dennis Basso)
The three best dressed couples of the night, the men looking dapper and the ladies looking perfectly glamorous. And honestly who doesn’t love Johnny Depp no matter what he wears?
(Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds in Gucci, Victoria Beckham in her own design, Johnny Depp in Ralph Lauren Purple Label and Amber Heard in Giambattista Valli)
These next outfits however, I was not so fond of. As sad as it is, I think that the majority of the guests in attendance really missed the mark with their fashion choices. Many of the stars seemed to be confused about what event they were attending, a Gala is an opportunity to dress to the nines and go for complete glamour but many ladies were either too casual or too naked. On top of that, there were some beautiful gowns but they were just not appropriate for the event. The Met Gala marks the beginning of the Spring/Summer season and that calls for brighter colours but there were countless dresses in deep fall tones and plenty of boring black and white.
These four outfits just confused me, Charlize Theron looks outdated, Kristen Wigg looks like a broken satelitte dish, Kirsten Dunst is obviously on another planet and the lovely Naomi Watts looks like she’s molting.
It was the same situation with the rest of my “worst” dressed choices, their fashion decisions just did not make any sense when you relate them to the theme or any of the current or upcoming trends.
I really hoped for some more show-stopping gowns at this years Met Gala but I was left disappointed. Hopefully next year, the guests will knock it out of the park.
Did you watch the Met Gala Red Carpet? What looks were you loving or hating?
