July Beauty Favourites

Hey Beauties!

Can you believe it's August? I feel like summer just got here and now fall is just around the corner. I genuinely think this might have been the shortest summer I've experienced, even shorter than when I was a kid in school. Most of the summer has been filled with rainy muggy days and it's only been the past 2 weeks or so that we have had sunshine and hot temperatures.

Anyway onto my favourites for this month, I decided to share my top favourites on here and then I will also have a few more favourites in a video coming soon!

My first two favourites are makeup with the first being the Becca Cosmetics and Jaclyn Hill Shimmering Skin Perfector in Champagne Pop. It is the most gorgeous highlight in existence, it is a white gold with peachy tones that seems to look magically stunning on absolutely everyone.

Next are the new Maybelline Colour Blur Matte Lip Pencils, I love a good matte lip and Maybelline always has the best matte formula at the drugstore so I was excited to try these out. They are super creamy, smooth and ultra pigmented and they come in some amazing shades. I will have a full review soon!

Next up is the Dry Bar 100 Proof Treatment Oil for hair. Dry Bar is a brand that I loved for a long time, their Triple Sec texturizing spray is one of my holy grail hair products but it has always been really difficult to get ahold of. Not the case anymore because they are coming to Canada!! To celebrate their Canadian release they sent me a few products and the 100 Proof oil instantly wowed me. I applied it in wet hair and once my hair was dry, it was shining and ridiculously soft. I have never loved an oil as much as this baby!

So those are three of my absolute favourite products from the month of July and I will share some more with you soon!!

What did you love this past month?

Follow Along | Paint Nite

Hey Beauties!

You know that I always want you as a reader to feel a connection to the person behind the blog and one of my favourite ways to do that is to bring you along to events and fun activities. Well this past Saturday I attended Paint Nite with a few of my friends and I couldn't wait to share it with you!

I've seen Paint Nite floating around on social media over the last couple of weeks and it looked like so much fun, so when they reached out to ask if I would like to attend a night I immediately said yes!

Paint Nite is a new sort of event based on having a good time with friends while learning a little something and enjoying a drink or two. Paint Nite partners with various restaurants around the GTA to host a 2 hour session where you learn to execute a specific painting in a fun and stress free environment. They supply all of the paint, brushes, canvases and smocks and you are led by an artist who will take you step by step through whatever painting you are doing.

For me, Paint Nite was at Spring Rolls in Hamilton and we learnt to paint an impressionistic view of Paris and the Eiffel Tower. I was a bit nervous because I haven't even held a paint brush since high school but it was so much fun and so easy that I really think anyone could do it!

I think Paint Nite is a really great event and such a fun way to get people to think creatively while also drinking responsibly. I really like the actual event but I do think it could be improved. Tickets are $50 for 2 hours and while you do get all of the supplies you need to execute the painting, those supplies would only cost a few dollars at a store.

When you arrive you are handed a drink menu and asked to pick one and Paint Nite's advertising places a huge emphasis on drinking to the point where it seems like at least one drink is included in the $50. I think that is understandable because a $5 drink won't do much to their overhead cost if it is included but sadly it is not. There were quite a few people at my event who were not happy to be asked to pay for their drink at the end of the night. I think their marketing is misleading and the cost is a bit high. You can get discounts and that brings the cost down but it's something to consider.

I had a really great time and I'm so happy I went. I do suggest it if you are not bothered by the cost.

I do have a coupon code which will save you 30% off of the original price and that is the word INSTA or TWITTER on the Paint Nite website.

Review | Tarte's Park Ave Princess Contour Palette

Hey Beauties!

I must admit that I am always attracted by cute packaging and it has a lot to do with why I buy certain things. Well over the holidays I caught a glimpse of the tarte cosmetics Park Ave Princess Contour Palette and just about died for the gold case and lilac font. It was so gorgeous that I had to pick it up without knowing anything about it, which is not my normal way of buying things.

After playing with it a little bit, I decided I wanted to share my thoughts but by then it was completely sold out online. It was a limited edition product so chances of anyone being able to get their hands on it were slim to none BUT now that tarte has decided to make it a permanent product I knew it was a sign!

The tarte cosmetics Park Ave Princess Contour Palette is a rather simple contour kit compared to ones from Kat Von D and Anastasia Beverly Hills, instead of an array of contour and highlighting shades, taste offers one bronzer, one blush and one highlighter in a slim compact.

As suggested by the name, the compact comes with the Amazonian Clay Waterproof Matte Bronzer in Park Ave Princess, an Amazonian Clay 12hr Powder Blush in Posh - a pale pink and an Amazonian Clay 12hr Highlighting Powder in Champagne Gold - a golden beige. The bronzer is on the warm side, it has a distinct warm undertone but is not at all orangey. It is the perfect shade for warming up my fair complexion but I would not use it to contour, as I prefer a more grey tone to mimic an actual shadow.

The blush is a lovely light blush pink that adds just a hint of colour to my cheeks without being anywhere near overwhelming and the highlight is a shimmery warm gold that adds a glow to the skin but is not very noticeable. All three powders are relatively dry and powdery and lacking in pigment. They work for my very pale skin but for anyone darker than me it would be difficult to get them to show up.

Despite the dryness, the bronzer and blush blend really well and are easy to use. The highlight is not quite as easy, it has pretty heavy shimmer in it that tends to sit on the skin and draw attention to texture and pores. The base shade of the highlighter is so sheer that you are left with random shimmer particles sitting on your cheeks. Out of the three, I would use the bronzer to warm up my face and I would use the blush on lighter makeup days but the highlight won't get much use.

Since I wasn't overly thrilled with how this palette performed, I wanted to see if the new permanent version was really new and improved. According to Musings of A Muse - one of my go to blogs - the shades are slightly different and the texture of the highlighter is off. It seems that the new version isn't much better, so I'm really surprised tarte didn't take the time to improve the formula.

{ Top - Bottom - Blush, Bronzer, Highlight}

When I first bought the tarte Park Ave Princess Contour Palette I had really high hopes and unfortunately I was a bit disappointed. I think this could be a good palette for someone who wants a simple one stop shop for basic contouring but this is not the palette for chiseled cheekbones and an intense glow. It would also only work for someone with a fair complexion, I think it would be great if tarte would come out with different versions for various skintones.

The tarte Park Ave Princess Contour Palette retails for $41 CAD and can be purchased in Sephora stores or online

The Sunday Post

Hey Beauties!

Happy Sunday! Another week has sped by and I can't believe it's almost August! This week has been spent between filming videos and relaxing in my cool apartment because it has been SO hot out. I don't deal with extreme heat very well so I have been laying in bed watching Youtube videos and of course drinking all of the iced coffee I can manage. My go to Starbucks order in the summer is a Venti Iced Caramel Machiatto upside down with extra caramel, what do you order?

I also spent a couple of hours with Paint Nite, a company that hosts painting parties in various restaurants. I went with a few friends and had so much fun. I will have a post up about my experience on Wednesday!

Have you seen my videos from this week?

What did you do this week?

Style Saturday | Sunset Sessions

Hey Beauties!

Over the past couple of years I have become so much more in tune with my creative side. While I have always been a creative soul, working on La Belle Sirene and being able to create content that really speaks to me has had such a huge impact on my appreciation of art. Whether your art is film, sculpture, paint, music or anything else, I have come to love and admire every single person who chases their artistic passion.

So when my lovely cousin Caroline, a beautifully talented photographer, reached out to me with the idea of collaborating, I knew I had to do it! I have followed her career for a couple of years and watched her grow into a seriously talented woman who deserves much more work and recognition than she receives. She holds herself with so much confidence and is so incredibly professional. She exudes passion and you can feel the creativity flowing from her veins, our session flew by because she made it feel like we were simply hanging out and chatting. I cannot explain how much she impressed me and I will recommend her to anyone who is looking for a photographer.

I am so incredibly happy with how these photos came out and I really hope that you guys love them just as much as I do. If you are looking for a photographer for anything from a children's shoot, pregnancy, engagement, marriage etc please check out Caroline Elizabeth Photography

Review | Maybelline Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Glosses

Hey Beauties!

Maybelline made its mark on the world of lip balms when they released their Baby Lips balms a few years ago, since then they have released a few variations so we could get our fix of new flavours. Every year we looked forward to seeing what new version would be coming up but Maybelline had a secret up their sleeves and this year they surprised us with the new Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Glosses!

The fun packaging, cute names, pops of colour and killer formula that we all know and love from the original Baby Lips is now available in an adorable moisturizing gloss! The Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Glosses come in adorable tubes with the original Baby Lips logo on the colourful caps and a clear bottom so you can see the shade inside. They have a traditional doe foot applicator that applies the perfect amount of product in a couple swipes.

They are available in 12 fun shades and 3 finishes - the Shimmers, the Creams and the Jellies. I have one gloss from each category and all three have the same killer formula and sugary scent. They are all quite sheer so the colours look similar but the various finishes do look different on the lips so you have plenty of options. They use light reflecting pigments to deliver a gorgeous shimmering creamy finish with some serious shine - perfect for throwing over your favourite lipstick to amp up the wow factor.

The glosses are formulated with Vitamin E and essential oils that deliver an instant dose of moisture for an ultra nourishing feel. You can feel the gloss working its magic within seconds and you are left with smooth soft lips and at least 4 hours of hydration. The formula is actually very reminiscent of the Baby Lips balms, it is slightly thick and feels like a balm to the touch before it dries down leaving no stickiness whatsoever. I have never found a gloss that didn't have at least a little bit of a sticky feeling but these babies have changed that. They seem to melt into your lips like a balm would so you don't actually feel like you have anything on.

{L-R Fab & Fuchsia* (jellie), A Wink of Pink* (shimmer), Life's A Peach* (cream)}

The Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Glosses are truly a balm in gloss form, they offer a punch of hydration, a super comfortable feel and a fun flush of colour for those no makeup makeup days or for adding over a lipstick. They are an awesome option and I can see myself picking them when I want a gloss because they make your lips feel so nourished.

They retail for $5.99 CAD and you can find them at your local drugstore starting now!

New In | Makeup Geek Eyeshadow Haul & Swatches

Hey Beauties!

If you follow me on Instagram or Snapchat (labellesirenexo) you may have seen a sneak peek of the newest additions to my makeup collection - Makeup Geek eyeshadows! I placed an order late last month and I waited anxiously until they arrived last week. Since then I have been dying to show you what shadows I bought and what they look like swatched.

I decided to hold off for a few days because I wanted to film a swatch video for my new Youtube channel - La Belle Sirene - but that video is now up - watch it here -  so I wanted to post a more in depth look at each shadow on here!

In total I ordered 31 shadows and 3 pigments, all of which arrived safe and sound. I also ordered a Z palette to house the shadows and it was such a great idea. Opening all of the shadows and placing them in the palette was so much fun and such a great way to get to know which was which from sight alone. The pans are magnetic so they easily snapped onto the Z palette and once in place they felt secure and sturdy.

It took me quite a while to figure out which shadows I wanted to buy but I need up going with primarily neutral shades that I can do just about anything with. I also added a few pops of colour and of course a few fun shimmery shades. All 31 shades completely lived up to my expectations, they are incredibly pigmented, buttery smooth, easy to blend and all around beautiful. There was not one shade that didn't blow me away with it's intensity and formula. Here are swatches of the original formula shadows. If you want to see swatches of the Foiled Shadows and the Pigments then check out the video!

Have you tried anything from Makeup Geek? What shades do you think I should get next?

New In | Becca Cosmetics X Jaclyn Hill Champagne Pop

Hey Beauties!

I don't think I've ever been quite as excited for any sort of release in the makeup world than I was - and honestly still am - for the Jaclyn Hill and Becca Cosmetics collaboration. I have been watching Jaclyn Hill for what feels like forever and she is literally my favourite "beauty guru". I have soaked up everything she has taught her subscribers like a sponge and I take her word as religion. I'm that girl that will run out and buy something just because she mentioned it in a video, it's sad I know but it's the truth.

I have also been known to call my friends out of the blue and scream to them about her latest tutorial or sneak peek of a collab I saw on Snapchat. So obviously when I heard about her newest collaboration with Becca Cosmetics, I may have had a small heart attack.  I already have a bit of a highlight addiction - it's legitimately a problem - I can't wear any sort of makeup without loading on the highlight and I'm not talking a subtle lit from within glow, I'm talking about a you can see it from space, beam of light. So pair that addiction with Jaclyn Hill - the queen of "highlight on fleek" - and all of my dreams have come true.

So after counting down the days until it would be released, thoroughly annoying everyone around me and seeking the help of a fellow beauty addict to get my hands on it, does it meet my expectations?
In a word, YAASSS.

Champagne Pop is a stunning white gold, peachy pink highlighter that pretty much blows every other highlighter on the market out of the water. It takes the best aspects of every other highlighter I've tried and combines them to create the ultimate in glowing, luminous skin.

In the pan it looks like a soft gold with a highly luminous finish but no glitter or sparkle but when you swatch it and shine it in different lights you can clearly see the white gold shimmer that makes it so magical.

It has a pretty heavy warm undertone unlike both Moonstone and Opal which are more cool and while I thought that warmth might be too much against my fair skin it surprised me. That warmth doesn't translate as heavy or uneven on my complexion but more just adds to that healthy radiant glow. To add to that every single person that I have seen wear it has looked absolutely stunning no matter their skin colour or tone.

Of course, Champagne Pop has the incredible formula that all of the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfectors have, it is creamy and smooth and feels like silk to the touch. Whether you apply it with your finger or a brush, it glides across the skin and practically applies itself. It is so effortless and will make you feel like a million dollars.

Champagne Pop is the highlight that other highlights dream of and I am so incredibly thrilled that I have it in my possession. Now I just have to wait until the next Jaclyn Hill collaboration and I hope to god that her lipstick line will come out soon!

Jaclyn Hill x Becca Cosmetics Shimmering Skin Perfector in Champagne Pop retails for $46 CAD and is currently sold out online but it has been restocked a couple of times so add your email to the Sephora website so you can be notified when it comes in. It is also available in Sephora stores if you can hunt one down!

The Sunday Post

Hey Beauties!

This week has been so crazy, I've been running around working on blog posts and trying to get everything ready to launch my Youtube channel.

After Stephanie had to leave our channel behind, I decided I wasn't going to give up and that I would keep following the Youtube dream on my own. I'm super nervous about it but I really hope that you guys will enjoy the La Belle Sirene channel as much as Steph & Court.

I want my channel to be an extension of my blog where I can post even better reviews, more hauls, favourites and even tutorials. This channel is going to be for the everyday girl, I don't want it to be unattainable in any way so I will try to make every video relatable and informative. My first video is up so go check it out and if you enjoy it, give it a thumbs up and subscribe, it would mean so much to me!

I also had a photoshoot with the lovely Caroline from Caroline Elizabeth Photography and it was so much fun. We spent a couple of hours shooting in a park that has so many beautiful backgrounds and I can't wait to see the finished photos. She did send me a sneak peek and that is the photo above!

How was your week?

Style Saturday | Festival Vibes

Hey Beauties!

This past weekend I decided to have a little adventure with my friend Heather, the city I live in hosts a weekend long festival that reflects the city we live in and the many cultures that call it home. I have attended since I was a little kid and it's always been a fun thing to do in the summer. So Heather and I put on our festival best, rocked some flash tattoos and braids in our hair and headed on over. We saw some great local artists, caught up with some friends, listened to some music, ate some amazing tacos and bought way too much fudge. It was so much fun and I absolutely loved my outfit so I wanted to share it with you guys!

Creating The Perfect Lip Combo

Hey Beauties!

Over the past couple of weeks I have been rocking the same lip combo nonstop and after wearing it in more than a few Instagram photos, I thought it was time to share it with you!

This mauvey brown lip is completely on trend for the moment and so flattering for a number of complexions. It feels like this shade was so difficult to find just a few months ago but now all of the big brands are coming out with their own versions and I am dying to add a few to my collection. Instead of just jumping out and buying a whole bunch of new lipsticks to find the perfect shade for me, I decided to shop my stash and see what I could create.

I pulled out all of my lip liners and lipsticks that were anywhere close to the colour I wanted and started swatching, mixing and layering. I found quite a few gorgeous combinations that I will definitely use but none were quite as perfect as my final choice. I paired the NYX Slim Lip Liner in the shade Natural with the Maybelline Colour Sensational Creamy Matte Lipstick in the shade Lust to Blush.

The NYX Slim Lip Liners are some of the absolute best lip liners on the market. The formula is complete perfection, they are so super creamy that application is a breeze and the moisturizing aspect means you can wear them over the entire lip without drying your lips out. They create such a perfect base for any lipstick, they will help it apply cleanly and smoothly while the colour will pop. They wear for hours and hours so you can leave the liner at home and take the lipstick or even just wear the liner alone.

The shade Natural is the perfect warm toned brown nude that really does look like a natural lip but if you are like me and have ghostly pale lips it will make them come to life. It is the perfect shade to help shape and define your lips or in this case it is perfect for adding a bit of brown and warmth to a cooler toned lipstick.

The Maybelline Colour Sensational Creamy Matte Lipsticks are my favourite matte lipstick formula from both high end and drugstore. They give a true matte look but without any sort of dryness. They feel weightless and so incredibly comfortable so you can wear them for hours on end without hurting your lips. If you want to know more about them check out my review here (since that review, I have added 3 more to my collection!).

The shade Lust to Blush is a stunning cool toned blush shade, essentially it is a mid tone pink with a hint of purple. It has been one of my favourite lipsticks for a really long time because it is so ridiculously pretty but it becomes a complete showstopper when paired with the lip liner.

After lining my lips and filling them in with the NYX lip liner, I added Lust to Blush over the top and blended them together. The lip liner added the warmth and brown tones that I was looking for while the lipstick added that hint of pink. Together they created the perfect mauvey brown colour and I am so in love with it.

The Maybelline Colour Sensational Creamy Matte Lipsticks retail for $10.99 CAD and the NYX Slim Lip Liners retail for $4.99 CAD. You can find the lipsticks at any retailer and I buy my NYX products from Rexall or online here or here

Have you ever created your own lip combo?

What is your favourite combination?
