How To | Easy Blog Post Props

Wednesday, April 08, 2015

Hey Beauties!

Last week I shared my favourite easy backgrounds for blog photos but no photo is complete without props styled to perfection so this week I want to share my top suggestions and tips for adding a bit of interest to your photos with props.

The photos that you choose to post on your blog will say quite a lot about who you are and the way you look at the world. In a way your blog is a brand and that brand should reflect your personality as authentically as it can, so my main tip is to draw inspiration from your surroundings. Everyone has little knick knacks around their home that mean something to them or stacks of books beside their bed, use those items to bring life to your photos. Use your passions or things that bring a smile to your face and inject those into your work as much as you can. Play with your favourite colours or patterns, showcase your favourite pieces of art or prints you find on the computer. All of these little details will help create a unique look that speaks to who you are and to your readers.

I have always had a love for everything feminine and french, I collect fake flowers and costume jewellery as well as anything with a Parisian flare. I love to read and collect books of all kinds from vintage Jane Austen novels to coffee table books on my favourite designers. I also have a strange need to write everything down and I am constantly making lists and charts which has lead to a ridiculous collection of notebooks and pretty little pens. I love to surround myself with beautiful images so I have folders filled with prints, drawings, typography and cards. All of these things make great props for my photos because they relay who I am in some shape or form.

So take a look into the spaces around you and open your eyes to the little things that you might not have noticed or considered before. Maybe you will find a few things that you can use in your next photo. For just a few more ideas here is a list of my favourite props.

flowers
magazines
notebooks
planners
ribbons
twine
coasters
gems
books
pens
pencils
notecards
frames
trays
dishes
teacups
jewellery
candles
nick knacks
photos
art
prints
drawings
herbs
fruit
accessories
momentos
action figures
& so much more!

  1. I need to get better at props! So far I'm shooting almost everything on a white or heavily blurred out background. Thanks for this :)

  2. I usually like to use what I find at charity shops. Sometimes its books, saucers, pieces of fabric. If I think it's pretty I have to plug it!

  4. Brilliant tips! I am having so many issues with my photography at the moment - I just never feel happy about my photos (bad lighting and a very, very basic and old lens are just getting the better of me). I'm definitely going to try out a few of these ideas though - your photography is always fantastic!

    1. Thank you so much Rachael! Sometimes you just get into a rut and you need to change things up try adding stronger lighting and see if that helps.

  5. I love the way your photos are styled! I think your advice about creating a brand for your blog is so key (and maybe also something I'm not very good at yet). If you find your own unique flare and stay consistent with it I think it creates a really pretty and cohesive look that will definitely attract and retain readers.

  7. I also gravitate towards fake flowers and everything feminine and/or Parisian - there's a lot to be said for immersing yourself in beautiful accessories/props! These photos support your ideas very well too as they completely live up to the ideal 'pretty setting' :)

  8. I've never thought of using props to create my photos other than when I photograph my Boxycharm or Ipsy beauty boxes. I will try that. I just don't have a nice coffee table background that I can photograph against. I will research it more.

    Thanks for the tip!
